What is Hafla for Humanity?

Hafla for Humanity UPDATE

COVID-19 has put our Hafla for Humanity events on hold. I’m leaving all the details below for information purposes. Hopefully, we’ll be back with live events in 2022.

Meanwhile, check out our online classes for a new way to support the H4H cause!

Hafla for Humanity brings belly dancers together to fundraise for women and children in Arab and Middle Eastern countries.

The event is our way of recognizing that our beloved art form is a gift from the MENAHT (Middle East, North Africa, Hellenistic & Turkey) countries. We are grateful for the art, music, dance, and culture that these countries have shared with us and we want to give back.

It’s also an opportunity to band together with our fellow dancers around the globe and share our art in a spirit of fellowship and gratitude.

Together, we are powerful.

  • In 2015, H4H organizers in more than 30 cities around the world raised over $22,000 for the International Rescue Committee‘s work with Syrian refugees.
  • In 2016, we raised more than $8700 for the Amar Foundation‘s work with Yazidi women and girls escaping ISIS.

Hafla for Humanity 2020 is helping to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen via the International Rescue Committee.

This year’s Hafla for Humanity Charity

This year, Hafla for Humanity will be supporting the International Rescue Committee’s aid to Yemen

Yemen is facing the largest humanitarian crisis of our time. Two-thirds of the population in Yemen is at risk for starvation. The Yemeni people are under siege by war, famine, cholera, and displacement.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been working in Yemen since 2012, and it is one of the few organizations that’s able to get aid into the war-torn country. The IRC is providing clean water, medicine, nutrition services and other urgent aid to as many Yemeni people as they can reach.

The organization spends a whopping 87% of its revenues on programming and is ranked in the top 1% of efficient and trustworthy charities by Charity Navigator.

Host a live Hafla for Humanity event

Hopefully in 2022 we’ll be able to start hosting live events again.

A Hafla for Humanity event doesn’t need to be a big, city-wide hafla. It can be 5 troupemates gathering in your living room to watch dance videos and pass a collection basket. It could be a class, a workshop, a potluck party at the studio or a teacher’s home… we welcome all events, large or small.

And we’re here to support your event any way we can — check out our resources for event organizers regularly to see what we’ve added.
